Coach Trip

Forde Abbey Gardens and Otter Nurseries

Thursday 21st May 2015

On Thursday 21st May 2015 several members enjoyed a coach trip outing to Forde Abbey near Chard, with a stop at Otter Nurseries.

The weather was perfect and an hour was spent at Otter Nurseries, to have a coffee and browse the plants and other items on offer. Several bags loaded with plants were carried back to the coach!

On arrival at Forde Abbey, we were greeted with the stunning site of the Abbey which stands in 30 acres of glorious gardens. The Abbey was built almost 900 years ago by Cistercian Monks and members had access to the house as well as the gardens. Inside the house were wonderful artifacts from all over the world and included some fantastic 17th C. Mortlake tapestries, which were incredible. On the lawn, a white pony was grazing and has apparently been at the Abbey for 50 years!

The gardens were beautiful, full of colour, seating areas around every corner, herbaceous borders, a bog garden and arboretum. They also boast a spectacular Centenary Fountain which is England's tallest powered fountain. this is switched on a set times through out the day and runs for 15 minutes each time. There was also a wonderful kitchen garden, a pottery and tea room. Once members had explored all these wonderful areas, they gathered in the plant Centre and gift shop searching for something unique to take home, as a reminder of this very enjoyable day.

Special thanks go to Janet Jones (Outings Secretary) for her excellent organisation of this outing.
